Artist Statement
I have never been concerned about whether these works sound pleasing or not. What truly matters to me is their intended message. It's a process that starts with musical skills and emotions, and ultimately connects back to humanity and human nature. Music is the medium through which I express my life and emotions. I want them to create a connection with the audience that goes beyond the sound itself, resonating with people and even making them think. Music may not have the power to change the world, but it has changed you and me.
DEI Statement
"Shang Shan Ruo Shui" is a Chinese proverb that translates to "The highest virtue is like water", and it conveys a powerful message: the most admirable qualities, the loftiest ideals, should be as fluid as water. Water, in its essence, nourishes all living things, it doesn't engage in conflicts, and it welcomes all.
The profound strength of water lies in its Diversity, Equity and inclusivity.
Music, like water, possesses the incredible ability to transcend language barriers, break down divides, and embrace a rich tapestry of diverse backgrounds, perspectives, cultures, and life experiences. This, too, is the essence of music—a form of enchantment that allows us to tap into empathy that goes beyond the constraints of physical time and space.
Teaching Statement
The essence of music fuels our learning and practice. Mastering an instrument means internalizing performance techniques to communicate through music. Before we start, I learn about each student's goals, set common objectives, and outline a phased plan.
Becoming a professional musician is a tough journey. I prioritize problem-solving and fundamental issues in my teaching, guiding students effectively.
Ultimately, we return to music's core - performance and application. This is where every student discovers the passion that drives their journey.
